Chakalaka Recipe

Chakalaka dish is another very delicious recipe that can serve for as a side dish, appetizer or a very nutritious quick meal. The very famous, very delicious South African delicacy CHAKALAKA. “Can’t lie, that’s a mouthful, try saying that five times under 7 seconds lol“. Another reason why this dish is right for you is its readily available ingredients.

You could serve with your favourite proteins, or a healthy drink, this dish will definitely give your taste buds a warm welcome treat.


  • 1 tablespoon oil, or as needed
  • 3 medium onions, diced
  • 2 medium green bell peppers, diced
  • 3 medium carrots, diced
  • 3 medium tomatoes, diced
  • 2 small Thai green chiles, chopped
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 cube vegetable bouillon
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • Baked beans

You can’t obviously make Chakalaka without baked beans, but you could use your favourite seasonings of your choice and sauces.

How to make Chakalaka Dish

Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat; stir in onions and bell peppers. Cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add baked beans, carrots, tomatoes, green chiles, water, bouillon cube, curry powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until mixture is well combined and thickened, 15 to 20 minutes.

Quick, easy and very delicious. You should give this a try and leave beans and bread alone for goodness sake. They didn’t bring you into this world to eat beans and bread.
